William Barribal

1874 – 1952

£1950

A Londoner, but trained in Paris, by 1900 Barribal was one of the leading painters and designers for the advertising industry, at a time when posters and illustration were vital to getting messages across – there was no commercial television in those days.

He produced superb examples featuring the lavish fashions of the Edwardian period and during the First World War, his talents were widely used by the War Office. With peace, his many clients included Schweppes, the LNER, and Vogue magazine, setting a style taken up by many of his contemporary artists.
