Ernest Tower Rosen - La Rose

La Rose

Ernest Tower Rosen

1877 – 1926

Rosen studied under William Merritt Chase in New York, and at the Academie Julien, Paris.  He lived in France, dying there in 1926.  His recorded works are almost exclusively of young, elegant women in luxurious interiors, very much of the Belle Époque, the period of perceived luxury, which ended with the outbreak of the Great War in 1914. This work is a typical example, and when sold at Christie’s, London, in 1997,  it achieved the highest price so far recorded.
