Arthur Wardle - Study for a Major Work

Study for a Major Work

Arthur Wardle

1860 – 1949

A prolific artist, Wardle had exhibited 130 works at the Royal Academy by 1936, mostly of works depicting animals. These were either exotic from inspiration at London Zoo, or domestic, usually dogs, terriers being particular favourites.

This work, purchased at Sotheby’s sale of the artist’s studio contents, would have been a study for inclusion into a major work, and something of a rarity.
