The historic and visual elements of clothing and textiles have been important throughout Aimée Payton’s career. After studying Technical Theatre Arts at University of Manchester she completed her Masters in the History of Design and Decorative Art at University of Brighton, giving her an understanding of the construction, history, and meaning of garments and textiles. Her Master’s thesis looked at costume research methods at Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, which led to a position as Costume Research Assistant at the Globe.
Aimée has been at the Ashmolean Museum for over a decade as Eastern Art Administrator. During this time she has worked with the textile collection whenever possible by project managing, assisting with exhibitions, and giving talks. She also co-ordinated two hugely successful Big Stitch events at the Ashmolean and curated Head over Heels, an exhibition of hats and shoes from museums across Oxfordshire (Museum of Oxfordshire). For seven years she has been the Chair of Oxford Asian Textiles Group and in her spare time she makes clothes and enjoys other textile crafts.
