John’s presentation provides an entertaining look at medicine and surgery from the Medieval through to Tudor times taking in ‘medical theory’ and the ‘scientific’ diagnoses of illnesses throughout the period, as well as treatments, starting with varied medicines and medical recipes- many of which are from Gloucestershire and held in local collections (Gloucestershire Archives and Museum in the Park). The talk then moves on to surgery, starting at the top of the body and working its way downwards.

John will use authentic instruments and props and demonstrate the various techniques for treating such things as diverse as headaches, toothworm, tonsillitis, battlefield injuries and lastly, amputations.
